Almost every intake manifold buying mistake on this engine comes from the same place: a listing says “fits Ford 5.0 Coyote,” and the Coyote has been in production since 2011 across at least four meaningfully different versions. The bolt pattern is rarely what stops the swap. The fuel system is.
This page is the fitment layer — what physically and electrically interchanges across Coyote generations, what does not, and the checks to run before you buy a used or OEM manifold. Read that table as one sentence: 2011–2017 is one world, 2018–2023 is a second, and 2024+ is a third. Everything below is detail on where the boundaries actually sit.
The four checks that decide fitment
Before you click buy on any manifold — factory, take-off, or aftermarket — run these in order. They’re listed by how often they’re what kills the swap, not by how obvious they are.
- The fuel interface. This is the big one. On a port-injection-only Coyote (2011–2017) the manifold carries all eight injectors and the fuel rails that feed them. From 2018 the engine gained direct injection alongside port injection, and the whole fuel arrangement — rails, injectors, and the control strategy behind them — is built around that. A manifold from the wrong side of that line isn’t a “make it work with adapters” job.
- The throttle-body flange. Bolt count, bore diameter, and the electronic throttle connector all have to match the throttle body you intend to run. Aftermarket manifolds commonly use a four-bolt flange sized for a large throttle body rather than the factory pattern — which is fine, as long as you’ve budgeted for the matching throttle body.
- The electronics on the manifold. Factory Coyote manifolds can carry charge-motion or runner-control actuators, and the Boss 302 manifold’s short-runner control is the well-known example. If the manifold has an actuator, your harness has to plug into it and your calibration has to know what to do with it. If it doesn’t and your ECU expects one, that’s a check-engine light and a tune conversation.
- Packaging. Plenum height against the hood, and clearance to the brake booster, wiper cowl, and whatever is in front of the engine. This is the check people skip and then discover with the hood two inches off the latch — and it’s the one that bites hardest on a Coyote swap into an older chassis, where the engine bay was never designed around this manifold at all.
Gen 1 and Gen 2 (2011–2017): the port-injection world
These are the two generations with the most in common at the top of the engine. Both are port injection only, so the manifold is the fuel-delivery structure — injectors and rails live on it. That makes used and take-off Gen 1/Gen 2 manifolds the most tradeable ones on the market, and it’s why the factory-performance swaps were built around this era.
The important caveat: “most in common” is not “identical.” Ford revised the intake between 2011–2014 and 2015–2017, and the 2015–2017 manifold is its own part. Sellers list these by year range for a reason. Buy to the year range, confirm the part number matches what you’re feeding, and confirm any actuator on the manifold is one your harness and tune support.

Gen 3 (2018–2023): direct injection redraws the line
The Gen 3 Coyote is where the interchange stops. Ford added direct injection while keeping port injection, and the manifold on these engines is designed around that dual-fuel arrangement. There is no useful sense in which a 2011–2017 manifold is a Gen 3 part, or the reverse — even where castings look familiar, the fuel and electrical interface and the calibration behind them are different.
This has a practical consequence for the used market: a listing that says “2011–2023 Coyote 5.0” for an intake manifold deserves real suspicion. Ask which engine it came off. Gen 4 (2024+): two throttle bodies changes everything
The 2024-and-later S650 Mustang 5.0 uses a dual air intake feeding two throttle bodies. The manifold has two inlets. That single fact settles the entire fitment question for this generation:
- No earlier factory Coyote manifold fits it.
- Effectively no aftermarket manifold built for the single-throttle-body engines fits it either — those parts predate the design.
- And a Gen 4 manifold isn’t a candidate for an earlier engine, because you’d need the dual intake tract, both throttle bodies, and a calibration that commands them.
If you own a 2024+ car, the practical instruction is narrow: filter listings to 2024 and later, and ignore anything advertised generically as fitting “the 5.0 Coyote.” The aftermarket’s default assumption is still Gen 1 through Gen 3, and it will be for a while yet. Mustang versus F-150: same engine, different manifold
This is the one that catches truck owners, and it’s worth stating plainly: the Mustang and F-150 5.0 do not use the same intake manifold. The two vehicles package the engine completely differently — hood line, cowl clearance, accessory and intake routing — and Ford tunes the truck 5.0 for low-end torque where the Mustang version chases rpm. Different part numbers, different parts.
So when you’re shopping a used manifold, “2015 Coyote 5.0” isn’t a complete description. You need the year and the vehicle it was pulled from. Truck take-offs and Mustang take-offs sit side by side in the same search results and look broadly similar in a seller’s photos.
The same caution applies in reverse on a swap: if you’re building a truck-sourced Coyote into a car chassis, or a Mustang engine into a truck, the manifold you inherit may not be the one that clears the engine bay you’re putting it in. Factory performance manifolds: what they were built around
Ford’s own performance manifolds — the Boss 302 short-runner piece with its runner-control system, and the drag-oriented Cobra Jet intake — were designed around the port-injection Coyote, which is the era their fitment claims are written for. Two things to confirm before buying one:
- Which engine the manifold is specified to fit, by model year, from the manufacturer’s own fitment listing rather than from a marketplace seller’s title.
- What it needs beyond the manifold — a matching throttle body, harness support for any runner-control actuator, and a calibration that accounts for both. The Boss manifold’s runner control in particular is not a part you can bolt on and ignore.

Aftermarket and fabricated manifolds
Aftermarket fabricated manifolds sidestep the factory fitment table and replace it with their own. While the manifold is off
The manifold coming off is the cheapest access you’ll ever have to the top of this engine. Do the work once:
- New intake gaskets, always. Factory seals aren’t designed to be reused, and a manifold vacuum leak will hand you lean codes and a rough idle that’s miserable to diagnose after the fact. - PCV and vacuum lines that have gone hard or brittle. They’re right there.
